A day in the life of a graphic designer

A day in the life of a graphic designer

Thursday, 1 March 2012

Ever fancied being a fly on the wall at another person’s day in the office? Read on to discover an average day at work for Natalie Tyler of Gosh Golly.

8.00am Check my diary, respond to emails and plan my day. Some orders from quotes sent out this week have been confirmed, including designing concepts for a loyalty card scheme for stall holders at a market at Portobello, London.

8.30am Make final tweaks on a  Christmas card design for one of the many marketing consultants I work with.  The cards are a great way to get his brand out there and keep in touch with his client base. We have chosen a bespoke size so order navy blue envelopes to match.

9.45am Lisa from ‘TransformingU’ emails me - please could I send her the adverts designed last month so she can make changes for some last minute space booked in a local directory. She wants to showcase both her style and weight loss businesses. Please can I keep some time free tomorrow to artwork the advert and get it to the publishers.

10.00am Give Moto Gymkhana a call to check they have received the pull up banners for their exhibition next week. They are in their second year of business and I have worked with them designing their logo and developing their brand. They are great guys to work with who are totally committed to their marketing.

10.30am Meeting in town with ‘Choc n Hog’. They want a brochure designed to showcase all the elements of their catering business. I learn that as well as hog roasts, they now do all types catering, bar facilities, marquee, furniture hire etc etc. So they are now wanting to create a parent brand and need more than the brochure. Really excited to be working on this.

12.45pm Back to the office, check and respond to emails.

1.00pm Lunch: a sandwich while reading latest news on the internet.

1.30pm Some amendments have come in for the forms I have created for an NHS hospital. The changes are marked up as post-its on the PDF document so nice and straight forward. Lots of terminology not in spell check so need to pay particular attention!

2.55pm My printer calls to let me know the Moto Gymkhana leaflets have gone out on an overnight courier to arrive tomorrow - in plenty of time for the exhibition next week. So they have got everything now, including various handouts and vinyl stickers plus banners to dress the stand.

3.00pm Some additional copy has come in from my copywriter Rachael, so quick cuppa then spend the rest of the afternoon working on ‘InClover’ magazine.  The client uses it to hand out at shows and to send to existing and prospective new customers.

6.00pm Can’t ignore my dog’s stares any longer so finish up for the day and take him for a lovely long walk in the Leicestershire countryside!
