Second Opinion Marketing

"I've used Natalie at Gosh Golly for a wide range of design projects for my clients – everything from corporate identity to adverts and literature – and always found her to be very creative but also efficient and well organised. This is a real bonus as many 'creative types' lack a commercial streak; with Natalie you get the complete package."

Friday's Quick Tip:
The design has been signed off, the client's happy, then you get the email... "Now can I have that in an editable format please?". Where do I start? Designers work in industry standard software which isn't widely used by the majority of workforces. This means that, unless you have the software, the designer will need to make any future edits. If you do want something that you can change yourself, then best to communicate this at the beginning so it can be supplied in software that is more mainstream (be prepared for certain limitations though). A lesson learnt for me too, and I should perhaps ask more questions at the start! For more about what I do https://goshgollygraphicdesign.co.uk/

Friday's Quick Tip:
Last week I really enjoyed admiring people's front door creations for Halloween. I was so impressed as to the creative lengths people had gone to and put my three pumpkins and real cobwebs plus resident spider to shame! Got me thinking... When I finished my degree some moons ago I travelled and worked in Canada, teaching children print making. Looking at my neighbour's decorations it reminded of what I used to say to them: there is creativity in all of us. A good mantra to bear in mind when working with clients, as although they are not the graphic designer, their creative vision is valued and all things creative are not exclusive to us. Does old fashioned Direct Mail still work? Yes, if it's done properly. Although an eye catching and clever design will help, what's more important is that you are targeting the right audience. Once you have your list sorted, spend time on communicating what you are offering with a great call to action, use it as a way to direct people online, and don't forget to proof read! Use personalisation for better response rates. If you are sending a lot out, run a few tests first to check it's successful. And finally, follow up, follow up, follow up. Direct Mail is being used less then ever before so take advantage of a great way to get your brand out there, and be creative with it!For more about what I do https://goshgollygraphicdesign.co.uk/

Friday's Quick Tip:
Before committing to having a large format design printed I would recommend visualising that product in situ. Take this flag for example, designed for Motogymkhana. It is for outdoor use and the initial design was to have the black background as used in a lot of their marketing material, but as you can see it gets lost in situ, and the white background works much better. Time spent dotting 'I's and crossing'T's = avoiding costly printing mistakes! For more about what I do https://goshgollygraphicdesign.co.uk/

Choosing a name for your business can be challenging - coming up with something catchy, meaningful, professional and with the domain/social name available can take some time. If you have a business that plans to cover a local area only, then consider using the geographical reference and what you do as part of it - this way, chances are it's not used already, and it also helps people to find you as these are the key words used by your potential customers when searching for your services online. "Natalie designed a website for my pet care business, the results of which have been extremely positive and people have commented on how much they like my website design. Her knowledge and design skills are brilliant and I’ve been so pleased with the site and the impact which it has had on my business. When I needed changes making to my site, Natalie responded very quickly and the changes were made within a few days. I would highly recommend Natalie/Gosh Golly."

We have been dealing with Gosh Golly for many years now and find that the service delivered is always what we need - on time, on price, courteous, always listening and willing to go that bit extra. We have had several brochure re-designs and Gosh Golly have helped us from initial thought process to arrival on the doorstop. I would not have any hesitation in recommending their services.

Clover Conservatories

"I am delighted to have been asked to write a testimonial for Natalie (Gosh Golly). We have worked with Natalie for many years, after having been recommended to her from a marketing consultant we were working closely with at the time. We underwent a complete re-brand, including new logos, stationery, website, advert design, van and exhibition trailer signage and finally an A5 magazine to promote our business to our customers and prospective customers at the shows and exhibitions we attend.

On every occasion, Natalie has been wonderful to work with. Her designs are eye-catching and current and she herself is always friendly and approachable, professional and knowledgeable and never gives the impression that anything is too much trouble (even when dealing with stressful colour-matching issues and tight deadlines).

I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Natalie and Gosh Golly and would never consider using anyone other than her for any of our work. I am also very happy to be contacted by telephone - for anyone who prefers a verbal recommendation!"

Cambridge Weight Plan

"Natalie has been a lifesaver for me as a small business - quick turnaround, great creative ideas and sensible pricing that means I don’t even think about attempting to do things myself - and the frustration that causes, I simply ping it to Natalie with a basic idea of what I want and something marvellous arrives in my in box - usually the same day! She knows the technical print requirements of many of the online companies and ensures you have totally print ready artwork to upload - without fuss or stress, brilliant. When I needed some perforated promotional material she sourced a supplier at a price much cheaper that I could find and organised the job from start to finish. Very Highly Recommended!"

Piped Up Property Maintenance

"I would like to thank Natalie for assisting in the rebranding of Piped Up. Thanks to her hard work and incredible design knowledge we now have a professional company logo, as well as logos for each sector of the business.

After some careful thought and consideration Natalie came up with a number of different designs and ideas that she felt would work for our company and would complement the services we offer. She asked for our input every step of the way, the outcome is a brand we are proud to use to represent our company.

I would highly recommend Gosh Golly but I would also recommend Natalie as a thoughtful and kind individual with a knack for gauging exactly what her clients want and need."

"I came to Natalie with no clear idea of what I really wanted, just that I needed a leaflet designed to showcase our product called Phytosport. Nothing was too much trouble for her and a few changes were made along the way. I was happy in the knowledge I could trust her experience and expertise.

The leaflet is a great way to make the first impression that reflects our pure, safe and beneficial selling point.

I am delighted with her design and she made sure that she kept me informed at each stage. It’s clear, concise, eye catching and very informative. It incorporates the product perfectly and I know that with Natalie’s design it will make my life easier to recommend the benefits to customers.

I have no hesitation in endorsing her brand to any business colleagues or friends."

Buzz Words

Buzz Words

Tuesday, 27 June 2017

As human beings I believe we do enjoy a sense of belonging, be it following a team, being part of a club, liking a certain type of music, or owning a particular car. I remember driving my Mini Cooper for the first time and how exciting it was when other Mini drivers gave me a wave - I loved that feeling of being a part of something exclusive! This does have a negative spin on it though, and there is a danger that people can feel ostracised if they are excluded from a club or group.

"What has all this got to do with buzz words?" I hear you ask? Well, just as I think I'm up to speed with the modern world, which includes the world of Graphic Design, a new word starts to be used... It would throw me into an inward panic, worrying what it is I don't know that everyone else does. Well that's just silly isn't it, and I told myself as much! It is not meant to be intimidating, it is the human need to be creative, and to come up with new terms to describe and reflect what is happening in our surroundings.

These days if I hear a new buzz word, I will embrace it, sometimes be amused by it, but above all want to find out what it means, and if I'm feeling a little risque, start to use it in my conversation!

Have I forgotten anything 26 years on?

Have I forgotten anything 26 years on?

Tuesday, 30 May 2017

26 years ago on the 12th June I graduated with a degree in graphic design. I was leaving college full of ambition together with a little sprinkling of apprehension that I was letting go of the security that being in full time education gave me. I had always wanted to be a graphic designer and when I left college there was a recession, and being brutally honest, it was tough getting on the ladder. I saw some of my peers taking completely different routes away from the creative world in order to start a career. I didn’t want to do this, and started out as a part time paste up artist for a newspaper. As it turned out, this wasn’t such a bad move after all as it gave me a great introduction to the world of print AND commerce.

Now all these years later, I am enjoying being my own boss, working with a fabulous variety of clients, where no two days are the same. It is a big leap from where I was as a 20 year old but a journey with ups and downs as one would expect following a career path.

Now have I changed I wonder, and do I recognise that person in the mortar board looking back at me on a sunny day in Wales? I think I have a great deal in terms of knowledge and experience gained – I still can’t believe I didn’t know the difference between RGB and CMYK when I graduated! Working for myself I am now responsible for finding new clients which is a skill set I didn’t need as both a student and an employee. I do love what I do but am no longer in a position of creative absorption – something I had completely as a design student, and in abundance as an employee.

Looking back, do I miss this? Honestly, yes I do. I especially miss the naivety of being a student, having a freedom to explore that the commercial world with deadlines and budgets generally just doesn’t allow (in my world anyway). But I shouldn’t forget this, because it was part of my preparation for the commercial world after all. I must remember to let go with creative ideas because that’s where new and exciting work comes from. Graphic design isn’t a formula, and 26 years on with all my knowledge and experience, I need reminding of this from time to time.
