Not just a logo
To dispel a common misconception, a logo is not the brand. Imagine being handed a fabulous looking book, opening it up and there is nothing inside - what a waste of a lovely cover design! It would be like having a logo with nothing to support it. A company brand is the message it is giving to its customers. Once the core values are established, then the brand can be built which INCLUDES the logo, strategy, people, visual presentation, tone of voice, style of photography, font usage etc etc. These need to remain consistent across all platforms used such as websites, advertising campaigns, exhibitions, premises and marketing material. We all want our logo to represent our brand instantly, and this is something that doesn’t happen overnight, so be patient, persistent and on-brand!
Well yes, I think it is! My brain is always taking snap shots of things I see that I like and last night was no exception. Back in the day my husband was a big fan of Dire Straits (I secretly was but they didn't quite fit with the Indie bands I used to draw on my rough book!) so off we went to Nottingham with our now 13 year old to see a tribute band, who were actually very good. Apart from enjoying the music I spent most of the evening admiring their logo which was used as a full size back drop. It's very clever don't you think? Anyway, it is now logged somewhere in my right hemisphere to be drawn upon if needed in the future! For more about what I do https://goshgollygraphicdesign.co.uk/

I recently visited the Blitz Exhibition with my two besties from school - always a guaranteed good fun day out with that pair! I loved every minute there revisiting the 80s vibe, having a giggle with the interactive displays and generally remembering how cool everything was... The free spirited creativity during that time was plain to see. The nostalgic experience for me was a positive one. Looking at The Face covers and other magazine layouts it took me back to my early relationship with graphic design and how excited I was at exploring new layouts and concepts. So what did I learn for this weeks Friday Quick Tip? To remember how I felt and what inspired me to start my design journey, and this in turn has given me a fresh approach to my current work and to embrace possibly childish ideas that can become ideas that work! Recently I talked about the difference between Sans and Sans Serif fonts, and there are couple more to add to the mix...
It could be argued that Slab typefaces are part of the Serif group, but they are different in that all the stroke weights are very heavy, and I love them! Great for making a statement, they really pack a punch.
Script fonts present another choice altogether, and are identified by looking like handwriting. With lots of curves and generally connecting strokes, they evoke emotion. Hard to read when small, they are best when using a small amount of words.
A fan of both, there is lots of fun and creativity to be had when designing with them! For more about what I do https://goshgollygraphicdesign.co.uk/

I do love a challenge (who doesn't?) and my car industry clients certainly present me with them! I have talked about font overload before, and not to use too many. The motor trade however is notorious for having lots of different fonts all jumbled up together - think of the sponsor decals on rally cars for example. This design here is for a sticker to go on a kit car, and it includes five different fonts, plus a logo! The challenge was to get them all to balance together, and after trying different sizes and positions we got there in the end! For more about what I do https://goshgollygraphicdesign.co.uk/

I have met many people since starting Gosh Golly all those years ago, and so you can imagine my business literature collection is pretty impressive! As well as our online presence, we still have good old print, giving a chance to underline our professionalism. It can be tactile and reiterate your brand message in a permanent capacity. So, it's a good thing to be different. There are some wonderful print finishes such as spot UV, foil blocking and embossing that can give your message the wow factor. Yes, they cost a little more but why not hey, let's stand out from the crowd! For more about what I do https://goshgollygraphicdesign.co.uk/

We've all heard the words 're branded' being mentioned, and it sounds a very costly affair, but quite often it needn't be. A company could have altered its business model so the branding gets addressed. In a lot of cases it may not need big changes, here just the wording was altered. Although the logo is old (in marketing terms), it hasn't dated, so if it ain't broke... don't change it, well not too much! For more about what I do https://goshgollygraphicdesign.co.uk/
